Gentle Chiropractic Care for Infant Colic and Irritable Babies
It is important to know that your baby is as comfortable and pain-free as is possible. Many babies suffer from “colic”, many starting at about 2-3 weeks of age. The symptoms of infant colic occur in about 1 in 4 babies (25%).
Colic supposedly disappears “naturally” at about three months of age. As such the problem is often trivialised by health professionals, often out of concern that bad habits are being formed in paying too much attention to the child. Not surprisingly, such a wait can wear both mum and dad out, as well as negatively impact the child later in life. Read about research
Who can wait three months? Get early relief.
Finding relief early is a reasonable objective. Parents seek relief earlier than the three months usually recommended because the distress these symptoms cause. The sequence of treatments tried by parents varies because of the different ideas as to what causes colic.
The cause of colic is still yet unknown. Colic is thought to be a problem of the bowel initially being immature. This is reasonable because the symptoms often settle themselves, the symptoms are related to feeding and burping can ease the symptoms temporarily.
An alternative explanation is possible though, when one takes into account the spine and that the pain signals travel via the nervous system. The successfulness of chiropractic in these cases suggests the nervous system may also be immature.
This is where chiropractic care may be beneficial for your baby. A chiropractic examination can indicate whether chiropractic treatment is likely to be of benefit.
